It’s been a busy week for The Seamless Workforce team as we attended the HRO Today Summit and brought you interviews with Kevin Kruse and Dr. Peter Cappelli. So as we head into the long (and much deserved!) weekend, here is a quick recap of the trends we’ve been following over the past few weeks:
- There’s been a lot of buzz around IT talent. Earlier this week, ZDNet published details from a Dice report which highlighted the top states where there are IT skills shortages. California, New Jersey, Texas, New York, and Massachusetts topped the list. This builds on the news that broke last week that IT employment has regained its recession losses, and hit 4 million.
- The Wall Street Journal reported on a study from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which found that 40 percent of this year’s entry-level jobs will be filled by former interns. Employers cite better performance and understanding a company’s culture as key reasons for hiring former interns. This young talent could also be the reason that we’re seeing “acqhiring” becoming a new trend, as tech giants buy up smaller companies to acquire the talent at them. Could this form of talent acquisition be another form of the competitive tech market and a budding war for top talent?
- Employment branding is becoming more critical, according to “In Hiring, Firms Shine Images.” Firms like PepsiCo have invested significant amounts of money to improve their employer brand. In one example, PepsiCo profiled employees in online videos to attract top talent and convey company culture.
