Rely on basic workforce principles to ride out economic recovery

On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics presented a bleak unemployment report with fewer jobs added than expected and a continuing downward trend in the employment rate. As providers in the talent solution industry, we’ve noticed these trends with our customers as well.

Many experts point to the uncertainty regarding the debt ceiling negotiations taking place in Washington as one of the key reasons that companies are not hiring. There’s so much uncertainty regarding what changes will result from the discussions that businesses are taking a “wait and see” approach before taking the plunge on hiring.

Many of us have been in the professional staffing service business long enough to know that no economy is permanent and that, just as we saw healthy and struggling conditions in the past, so we will see them in the future. This economy has certainly been more prolonged and challenging than we’ve seen in our professional careers, but we have to believe that sticking to our basic principles is the best way to get through it.

As recruiters, we know that there is more talent available now, but we need to be as focused on finding the right talent as we’ve always been. Placing someone in a position that is not right for them or for the hiring manger will ultimately not benefit either in the long run. Despite the bad news, if we keep to our standards and our principles, we can ride out difficult times until things change for the better.
